6 Questions You Must Ask While on Your Initial Call

Below is a list of questions that you need to ask a company representative before committing to a consultation with a Home Comfort Advisor.

Question #1: How long will the consultation take?

A proper consultation should take between 45-90 minutes.  This is ample time for the comfort specialist to evaluate the system, go over options, answer your questions, and discuss a solution that is right for you.  Anything less may leave stones unturned that could be valuable during the replacement.  Anything longer should only be dictated by you if there are additional questions or you are interested in learning more about system accessories, upgrade options, etc.  Do not allow someone to quote you a new system over the phone if they have never been to your home.  There are way too many variables to consider and allowing someone to quote a new system over the phone may open you up to a system that is installed incorrectly.

Question #2: Do you offer financing?

You need to ask this question even if you are a cash buyer.  If they say no, you should hang up the phone.

Question #3: Will you be sending any notification as to who will be coming out to my home?

A company that is focused on providing great service should want you to be completely comfortable with a stranger coming to your home.  This notification should include a picture of the comfort specialist and a little about that person.  This information will allow you to verify that the person that shows up is the person that is supposed to be in your home.

Question #4: Who owns the company & how long have you been in business?  

While you may have uncovered these answers from a company’s website, it is important to ask a person who works for the company as well.  If they are able to answer these questions, it is a good indicator that you are dealing with a local company and the owners of the company are involved.  If the person on the other end is unsure, this may point to franchise owners who are not involved in the workings of the company.  Again, who would you rather deal with when it comes to your home?

Question #5: Are you licensed and do you handle all the permitting requirements?

Believe it or not, there are still companies out there doing HVAC installations that are NOT LICENSED.  This could potentially put your family and the value of your home at a huge risk.  Any reputable company will have copies of their licenses on hand and should be able to produce a copy if needed.  Make sure they have a current license with the city you live in.  Permits and INSPECTIONS are for your safety.   If an installation is completed without a permit and is found to not meet code requirements, YOU could be required to make the repairs at YOUR OWN EXPENSE.

Question #6: Does your company carry the proper insurance?  

When it comes to the matter of insurance, many people don’t realize that they are potentially opening themselves up to a huge liability when they have a company working on their home that is not properly insured.  Proper insurance PROTECTS not only the company and their employees, but YOU as well if there is an accident causing bodily injury or property damage that happens while they are on your job site.

On September 15th in Washington D.C., Chad Peterman was presented a very honorable award for our marketing here at Peterman, called the Nexstar Eddie award.

This prestigious award is sought after by many companies that are part of the Nexstar network.  In fact over 500 companies are a part of Nexstar!

This means that out of all the members of Nexstar throughout the country we won the marketing award for 2017 for the “Free Furnace Promotion” that we ran at the beginning of this year.  This is a fantastic accomplishment for our company & for all the employees involved.  We are very proud and can’t wait to see what we do next year.

Bring-The-Heat 2017

As a company we are a part of the Heating & Air Conditioning Alliance of Indiana.  In preparation for this winter, our company is proud to say that two of our employees Jason Peterson & Bill Judkins volunteered in the “Bring the Heat Day.” This year was the 14th annual Bring the Heat event held on Sept. 30th, 2017.”  This program provides free heating services to the elderly, the disabled & low-income homeowners that are at risk of losing their heat this winter.  Alliance members volunteered their time, supplies and expertise.  “The event does not receive government funding & relies solely on volunteers for financial donations, labor, equipment & parts to inspect, clean & replace furnaces for Indianapolis families in need.”

Jason & Bill helped ensure proper furnace operation to save lives and to provide a helping hand to those that need it the most.  “Throughout the past five years alone, nearly 600 furnaces have been cleaned, more than 25 furnaces have been replaced for free, and nearly 70 furnaces were repaired at no cost to the owner.”  We are just happy that we could help!  Good job guys!

We have all been guilty of using something that has passed its expiration date, but we thought we could get one more use out of it before it finally failed.  Some people are no different when it comes to their heating and cooling system.  You may have had multiple costly breakdowns, but feel you can get another season out of “Ole Reliable.”  I think we can all agree that breakdowns on things we are trying to “get a little more life out of” often fail at the worst possible time.

When it comes to your heating and cooling system, we see some people doing this very same thing.  If you fall into this category, it may be time to switch into planning mode.  It is always better to be proactive as opposed to reactive.

The heating and cooling system is one of the most important systems in your home.  Waiting until it completely fails is only going to put your “back against the wall” when it comes to replacement.  It is better to

be in a position where you can evaluate your options and make the proper INVESTMENT in your home, rather than settling for having to make a quick decision on a costly system.
Choosing the right company to install your system is a process and you will need the right amount of time to make the proper decision.  Again, you are investing in a SERVICE and you need to find a company you can trust.

Maintenance is the KEY…

One way to help avoid this situation is to have your system maintained by a professional company.  Most reputable companies have a service plan that includes regular maintenance, priority service, and discounts on future repairs and upgrades.  It is my advice to find a great company that offers a service plan for your heating and cooling system.  Most companies that service heating and air conditioning equipment will also having plumbing services, which can also be a bonus!

The reason maintenance is so important is because a professional can help prolong the life of your system along with pin point problem areas that may cause a complete breakdown.  Regular tune-ups by a professional can also increase the efficiency of your older system and save you money on your utility bills.  Overall, seasonal service on your system is just as important as getting the oil changed in your car.

Ultimately, emergency situations are inevitable without proper preparation.  Having your unit properly maintained by a reputable company will allow you to be proactive.  A professional will be able to educate you on when you should look at replacement versus when you should make a repair.  Take this valuable step to avoid being put in a bad situation.

5 Biggest Misconceptions About Your Heating and Cooling System

When it comes time to purchase a new heating and cooling system, it might be your first interaction with a company that performs this service.  That is okay.  There are a ton of misconceptions about the industry as a whole that can lead to confusion.  Below is a short list of 5 common misconceptions:

  1. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!  We hear this popular saying a lot.  However, in most cases not fixing something doesn’t cost you extra money in the long run.  When it comes to a furnace and air conditioner, continually dumping large repair costs into a unit and allowing it to perform at decreasing efficiency levels is only going to make the total cost to replace your system greater.  Remember a heating and cooling system is operating the majority of the time throughout the year.  Continuing to patch a system together is only going to slowly drain more and more dollars out of your bank account.
  2. The only time I need to have a service technician out is if the unit is not working.  This is probably the most common misconception.  A heating and cooling system is much like your car.  It needs regular maintenance.  You wouldn’t go 20,000 miles and never get an oil change, would you?  The same goes for your heating and cooling system.  Regular maintenance on your system is going to keep your system running at peak efficiency levels, increase longevity, and help you avoid a broken-down unit at the worst possible time.
  3. All equipment is the same.  Unfortunately, as has been stated numerous times, the performance of your equipment is largely dependent on who installs the system.  This is especially true when you are talking about some of the higher efficiency equipment.  A small mistake during the installation could result in a much lower efficient unit.  While most equipment is made in the same factory with only a different badge on the front, the largest factor in the performance of your system is how and who it is installed by.
  4. The company that provides the lowest price is always the company you should choose.  This could not be further from the truth.  Unfortunately, the lowest price usually points to the lowest quality.  You get what you pay for!  You are looking for a company you can trust.  Oftentimes, to get outstanding service and expertise you may have to pay a higher price.  When making this decision you will want to make sure the value is there.  The highest price does not always dictate the best value either.  When you find a company you can trust, most times you can trust they are providing you with a fair price for the service they are providing.
  5. All heating and cooling companies are the same.  During your search for the right company you will see that this is not true.  Each company out there is going to have their own vision of what they want to be as a company and what type of service they want to provide their customers.  You want to make sure whoever you choose has the same vision of service that you value.  Are you and the company a fit for each other?  Do they deliver exactly what you are looking for?  These are all great questions to consider when evaluating companies.
